Sainte-Maxime, Fréjus & the Gulf of Saint-Tropez — Everything explained in 30 seconds

The Gulf of Saint-Tropez is a natural harbor enclosed by the Saint-Tropez peninsula to the south and open to the Mediterranean Sea to the east. Sainte-Maxime is located on the northern shore of the gulf—opposite Saint-Tropez, a 15-minute ferry ride away. Fréjus is to the east, 30 minutes away via the D25 or the N98.

This location is ideal for you: from Sainte-Maxime, you have Saint-Tropez just a ferry ride away — and Fréjus within easy driving distance. And from Fréjus, our catamaran can sail in both directions: east (to the Calanques of the Estérel) and west (to Cap Taillat, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez). It's a combination you won't find anywhere else in the Var region.

What you see from Sainte-Maxime

→ Saint-Tropez and the peninsula, opposite

→ The gulf open to the Mediterranean

→ The beaches of Pampelonne in the distance

→ Sailboats entering and leaving the gulf

→ The Fréjus coast and the Estérel mountains on the horizon, to the east

What you can discover by catamaran

✓ Cap Taillat and its Caribbean-like waters

✓ The secret coves of the Estérel

✓ Île d'Or and Pointe du Dramont

✓ The Gulf of Saint-Tropez from the sea

✓ Sunset over the Mediterranean, from the deck

Our catamaran trips from Fréjus — 30 minutes from Sainte-Maxime

From the port of Fréjus, our catamaran offers four exclusive packages to the most spectacular natural sites in the Var region. Maximum 22 passengers, all-inclusive, professional skipper. Pack light—everything is provided on board.

Why is our catamaran departing from Fréjus and not from Sainte-Maxime?

There are no small group catamaran trips based in Sainte-Maxime.

Boat trips available from Sainte-Maxime are mainly ferry crossings to Saint-Tropez or group boat tours. No operator in the area offers access to the Esterel coves in small groups (22 people max) on a stable and comfortable catamaran. This service is available in Fréjus — a 30-minute drive away.

Maximum 22 passengers — the luxury of an intimate gathering

Boats departing from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez often carry 40 to 80 people. At Catamaran Fréjus, the rule is unwavering: a maximum of 22 passengers. No crowded shuttles, no engine noise drowning out the sea. A more intimate experience—and that's why our passengers keep coming back.

Fréjus is halfway between the Estérel mountains and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

From Fréjus, our catamaran can sail in both directions: east (Estérel, Cannes coast) and west (Cap Taillat, Gulf of Saint-Tropez). This is a unique geographical advantage in the Var region. From Sainte-Maxime or Saint-Tropez, the Estérel is more than two hours away by boat—too far for a half-day trip.

Destinations
Image de Valentin Kremer

The Var is among the richest maritime departments in France. Its coast, which extends from Bandol in the west to Théoule-sur-Mer in the east, presents an exceptional diversity of landscapes: limestone calanques of the Hyères islands, cork oak forests of the Maures which descend to the sea, red volcanic rocks of the Estérel, natural harbors like those of Saint-Tropez or Fréjus.

The Estérel — the red jewel of the Var

Between Fréjus to the east and Saint-Raphaël, the Esterel Massif offers one of the most spectacular coastal panoramas in the Mediterranean. Its rhyolite rocks, a volcanic rock 250 million years old, have taken on a characteristic blood-red hue that contrasts with the deep blue of the sea. This coastline is classified as a Natura 2000 site and is one of the few coastal areas in France where no road runs directly along the sea. As a result, its calanques (rocky inlets) are only accessible on foot (coastal hiking) or by sea, by catamaran from Fréjus.

The Gulf of Saint-Tropez — mythical and unspoiled

West of Fréjus, the Gulf of Saint-Tropez opens onto a natural harbor protected by the Saint-Tropez peninsula and the three capes (Camarat, Taillat, and Lardier). Cap Taillat, at the tip of the peninsula, is one of the few places on the French Riviera where you can find turquoise waters and a white sandy bottom worthy of the Caribbean—without having to cross the Atlantic. It's the destination of our 3 Caps Day Trip, a 1.5-hour sail from Fréjus.

The Lérins Islands — accessible by catamaran from Fréjus

A 45-minute boat trip east from Fréjus, the Lérins archipelago comprises two unspoiled islands: Sainte-Marguerite (with its famous fort where the Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned) and Saint-Honorat (home to a working Cistercian monastery, producing wines and liqueurs). Their waters are among the clearest and most pristine on the entire French Riviera. Our Estérel & Lérins day trip combines these two destinations in a single excursion.

An eco-friendly catamaran trip

  • We favour sailing and limit the use of engines to reduce noise and polluting emissions that could affect wildlife and flora.

  • We reduce plastic consumption , which is one of the main causes of marine pollution, by simply removing it from our excursions.

  • We sort and recycle our waste.

  • Sailing offers a peaceful and moderate-speed exploration that has less impact on marine ecosystems.

4) Are there catamaran trips directly from Sainte-Maxime?

Boats operate from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, mainly shuttles to Saint-Tropez or group tours. No operator offers a small-group catamaran experience (22 people max) with access to the Esterel coves from Sainte-Maxime. This unique service departs from Fréjus, a 30-minute drive away.

5) Can the catamaran be chartered privately for a hen party or birthday party from Sainte-Maxime?

Yes. From Sainte-Maxime, reach our port of Fréjus in 30 minutes and charter our catamaran for your hen party, stag party, birthday, or seminar in the Var region. From €1,050 all-inclusive for 12 people. Customized program to suit your preferences — Estérel, Gulf of Saint-Tropez, or both.

6) When is the best time for a catamaran trip from Sainte-Maxime? June and September are ideal: warm seas (22-26°C), fewer people in the coves, and stable weather. In July and August, book 3 to 5 weeks in advance—weekends and morning slots fill up quickly. In May, the coves are almost deserted and conditions are often excellent.
